Nose whistle (instrument)

Nose whistle (instrument)
A rosewood nose whistle. The musician puts his nose on the upper hole. The air is directed towards the lower edge, where the open mouth makes the sound.

A nose whistle is a wind instrument of the woodwind family. The nose blows the air into the open mouth, which is a soundboard. The blown air is channelled towards an edge. The whistle acts like when blowing on a bottleneck, with the air resonating in the mouth as well as in the instrument. The air volume gives the frequency: the smaller the volume, the higher the note. This aspect of play is thus similar to a jaw harp.
