Construction of Norwegian Breakaway began on 21 September 2011, when the first piece of steel was cut at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.[1] She is planned to be delivered in April 2013, and will be 144,017 GT in size, and have capacity for about 4,000 people. [1] The ship will have a total of 1,024 staterooms and 238 suites, designed by Priestmangoode and Tillberg Design.[2]
Upon delivery, Norwegian Breakaway will be homeported in at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York City, making seven-day cruises to Bermuda.[3]
The ship, along with her sister Norwegian Getaway, were named through a public contest; Kimberly Powell chose the name Norwegian Breakaway, which was announced on 14 September 2011.[4]
