Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College is a college for girls with a mixed 6th form. It is located in Thornton Heath, Greater London, England. They provide an excellent education, as is shown by their academic record at GCSE and A level and by the most recent OFSTED report (Outstanding School). NMBEC also provides a broad and relevant curriculum for the different needs of all girls and ensure that all achieve their full potential by providing a well-ordered, stimulating learning environment. High academic standards are at the centre of this process. The college has a Specialist Business and Enterprise status and that is a key responsibility. They lead the way in the study of essential subjects and are developing and refining their curriculum to reflect their importance.

NMBEC Applied Learning

NMBEC gained Applied Learning status in April 2008. This enabled them to be more innovative with curriculum design and teaching/learning.They aim to use this specialism to further develop our students so that they become independent learners through high quality work-related, employability and enterprise programmes, using Deep Learning Days to facilitate the development of Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS). At KS4 and 5 the curriculum will enable students to enjoy a range of choices, to individualise their own learning, through the college offer and via local collaboration. NMBEC will continue to build links with the world of work and higher and further education institutions in order to enhance the curriculum and to provide students with up-to–date information on pathways beyond school

NMBEC Business and Enterprise

On the 1st September 2004, Norbury Manor became the first specialist Business and Enterprise College in Croydon. This means that as well as following a full and balanced curriculum, students will also be able to access a range of other opportunities as part of this specialist status. These will include participation in events related to the world of Business and Enterprise e.g. "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" in Year 8 or Deep Learning Days with an enterprise focus. KS4 and KS5 students undertaking courses in Entrepreneurship will benefit from our mentoring programme that involves local entrepreneurs and successful business people as mentors, offering their experience in the world of business to assist with running a small business especially in areas such as time management, organisational issues or just being a positive role model. Business and Enterprise will enhance our students’ time at Norbury Manor by raising aspirations and broadening their outlook for their choice of future career.

NMBEC Training School

Norbury Manor has been a Training School since September 2003. At the start Training School status was focused on initial teacher education. For many years NMBEC had been providing high quality trainee teacher placements and this status enabled them to develop this role. They now take PGCE student teachers (STs) in all subject areas and work closely with the Institute of Education, Goldsmiths College and SWELTEC They also work with overseas trained teachers and graduate trainees to undertake school based programmes leading to British Qualified Teacher Status. Over the years they have played a leading role in numerous projects such as "Taste Teach", mentor training and returnees programmes.

In recent years our work as a Training School has also focused on the Continuing Professional Development of all staff. We believe all staff are learners alongside the students and we can all develop our skills further. This is linked closely to the performance management process and the college development plan. They have also introduced a school based MA programme and their first cohort of staff have now achieved their degrees at St Mary's university. They have worked together as a group in school and their research projects have had a direct impact on the work and development of the school.

NMBEC is currently being assessed for the Pan London Professional Development Quality Mark. This Quality Mark Framework has been developed by London CPD leaders from schools and Local Authorities working in partnership with the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and London Centre for Leadership in Learning at the Institute of Education (IOE).

Sixth Form

The students in the Sixth Form benefit from being a part of a growing, caring community. They are encouraged to take part in events pertaining to the wider life of the college and in so doing, develop their leadership and citizenship skills. Additionally, the school organises a range of activities throughout the year to encourage students to look beyond their time in the Sixth Form and plan towards the future. These events include visits to universities and careers exhibitions, work experience and mentoring programmes pairing our students with those already at university. Sixth Form students are encouraged to develop the skills they will require in order to be successful in higher education or in employment. Time management and the proper use of resources are essential in developing the level of independent learning that is required for study at degree level. NMBEC Sixth Form students have the skills and confidence to take what they have learned and apply it to the next stage of their lives, be it further study or employment.

Curriculum

Their curriculum ensures that students are taught a comprehensive range of skills while creativity and initiative are developed through investigation and problem solving. A broad and balanced curriculum is offered to all students. At Key Stage 4, students can take a range of GCSE and vocational subjects. They are encouraged to maintain a broad and balanced curriculum to ensure that they have a sound base for further study. There is also an opportunity for students to follow a community language and study it to GCSE level or A level. All students follow a very detailed Personal, Social, Careers and Health Education course. This course is designed to help them make the most of opportunities in and out of college.

Home Learning

All students will be given home learning on a regular basis. It is considered an integral part of the students’ educational experience and a natural extension of their classroom studies.

Rewards and Sanctions

Good work and effort is rewarded by our Commendation system. Each year, achievement in all areas of college life is recognised and prizes are given at the annual Achievement Afternoons. Sanctions, which include detentions and, in very rare cases, seclusion and exclusion, are used when a student’s behaviour falls short of what is expected.
