The project idea

The "Nomads" project is designed to familiarize the public with the phenomenon of nomadism - the movement of modern mototravellers who, neglecting the comfort of the traditional means of transportation, sitting on their own "iron horses", travel thousands of kilometers for the sake of the purity of the world sense and understanding of their place in it. With the cameras they fixe for themselves and for us charming, breathtaking and ordinary moments of the environment, in which we subsequently may see something extraordinary. Their photographs tell the audience about the Road, life on the Road, introduce us to another world view that is radically different from the usual one.

Art curator - Petro Bevza, artist, member of the National Artist's Union of Ukraine, participant of many international exhibitions.

Commissioner and author of the project - Boris Filatov, honored journalist of Ukraine and a passionate fan of motocycle tours.

Every two years the project holds photo exhibitions of works of around-the-world mototravellers in different cities of Ukraine.

Exhibitions

The first exhibition "Nomads: On the horizon"

The first exhibition of this project was held from 14 to 28 March 2008 at the Museum of the Kiev fortress The Kosyi Kaponir ("Skew Caponier") and later in May at the Exhibition Hall of the Aerospace Center of Dnepropetrovsk [1]. The exhibition was called "Nomads: On the horizon". Participants of the Nomads photo exhibition "are not professional photographers," their snapshots are to show the public life of traveller, the traveler's perception of the world.

The photo exhibition was divided into different zones:

  • Zone "Retro" - told the story of a motorcycle of XIX-XX centuries, and pointed to the inextricable link between past and future;
  • Zone "Review" - was presented in the form of copyright photo reporting, which were to help to feel the real throbbing life of the road;
  • Zone "Images" – these are large-scale photo pictures (2,5 × 4,5 m), telling about the most exciting events, participated by heroes;
  • Zone "Heroes" - this area had up to ten canvases measuring 2,5 × 1,5 m. In black and white portraits were depicted people of Roads, the authors of materials presented to the project.

"We wanted to tell about modern nomads – people of road, mototravellers, explain, or at least try to do so, the reasons that make these people drop everything, leave family home, peace and quiet for a period of time, sit on the bike and race toward obscurity. Life of people who prefer bike to all the other modes of transport, not only shrouded in romance and mystery, but in a lot of contradictory myths."- the commissioner of the project Boris Filatov.

The Second exhibition "Nomads: Facebook"

From 6 to 12 April, 2010 in the exhibition hall of the Research Library of National University "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" (the former premises of the Centre of Modern Art after Soros) the second photo exhibition "Nomads: Facebook" took place [2]. During the exhibition the best photographs of the project participants for the period 2008-2010 were represented. The photographs show the life of ordinary people living on five continents which mototravellers have crossed. Variety of human sentiment became the focus of the photo exhibition. This explains its name.

Photo Exhibition "Nomads: Facebook" consisted of three main areas:

  • "Person vs. Continent" - six cycles of large-scale photographs, selected by the principle: one traveler - one continent.
  • "Person vs. Person" - six cycles of photos, selected by the principle: a traveler - the people who live on this continent.
  • "Person vs. Ukraine. 500 unpaved kilometers" - a series of pictures from travel on dirt roads of homeland.

In addition, within the project two interactive elements are scheduled. The first one - "Person vs. Time. GSM +8-8" - an exhibition object, which uses the effect of artificial approximation of long-term (reduced) objects in different time zones. The second one- "Person vs. The Movement" - an exhibition object, which partially allows you to experience a sense of nomad in motion, thanks to real vehicles, and a movie.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by the Russian Federation Honored travelers twin brothers Alexander and Sergei Sinelnik (Foundation of circumnavigation expeditions). Their track record consists of many daring expeditions: "Circumnavigation on ancient Slavic boat" RUSICH "(2010 - 2011)", “1000 km on foot in Western Sahara"(2010), "Seven deserts of the world on a motorcycle "IZH" (2006 -2008 ), "Rowing Marathon across the Indian Ocean" (2005), "Around the world on a motorcycle "Ural "(2002-2004), as well as climbing the highest mountain in the world, rafting on complex mountain rivers etc. [3]
