Niiu[1] is a personalized newspaper published in Berlin, Germany. First issued on November 16, 2009, each copy is printed individually with a range of news stories from newspapers and online resources selected to fit each reader's individual preferences. The publication is the first individual (1to1), customizable and printed newspaper worldwide.
As a daily newspaper niiu is published from Monday to Sunday[2], it consists of 24 pages[3] (2 pages of online content, 20 newspaper pages, 2 full advertisement pages[4]) that are individually composed by every customer himself. Currently a collection of 18 different international, national and local newspapers and more than 600 different online sources[5] are available within the niiu platform.
The price for an issue is 1.80 €, or 1.20 € for students[6]. The newspaper uses a prepaid point system that allows the reader to receive niiu only on specific days[7].

Evaluation
It has been called "a revolutionizing concept" by journalist peers[8] and CEO Lisbeth Knudsen of Mecon-subsidiary Berlingske Media calls it ”a bold project with interesting perspectives”[9] and Media researcher Horst Röper calls it a "brave" and "interesting attempt"[10]. Critics say that the personalized paper doesn't fit its target market group of young people, who prefer online media to print because it is faster and even more adaptable to individual needs[11].
Production
A complete novelty to the newspaper printing business is niiu's approach of using high-speed inkjet machines such as the Océ Jetstream 2200[12] for the production of a daily newspaper. The internal content-handling is implemented through automated processes based on the QuarkXPress Server Render Engine[13].
