- Night of the Demons (film series)
-
The Night Of The Demons is an American Comedyhorror franchise consisting of four films. The original film, Night of the Demons, was released in 1988. Written and produced by Joe Augustyn, and directed by Kevin S. Tenney, the sequels have had various writers and directors attached to them. Angela and her family are the antagonists in all of the films in the franchise. Tenney, who had a hand in directing the first sequel, has not had any direct involvement with the rest of the films. The film series is ranked eighth at the United States box office–in adjusted 2008 dollars–when compared to other American horror franchises. The first Night Of The Demons film is credited with beginning a long line of demonic films inspired by The Evil Dead. In 2010, a remake of Night Of The Demons, directed by Adam Gierasch is to be released, with talks of a prequel afterward.

Overview
Night of the Demons released in 1988, written and produced by Joe Augustyn and directed by Kevin S. Tenney was the first and most successful in the series. The Night Of The Demons is considered the first of the late 1980s and early 1990s Demon Possession movies descending from Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead (1981). The movie originated a great many of the clichés seen in countless big-budget slashers of the 1980s 1990s and 2000s. Its plot concerns a young female in California, who becomes possessed at her Halloween party, then begins a reign of terror. The films most notable character, Angela (played by Amelia Kinkade) is one of the most well known villains in horror cinema, notable for her ability to transform at will, disappear and appear at will and telekinetic powers. Although the film was never marketed as being a true story, or depict factual events, the mansion used in the first two films had an identical history to the one in the movie. It features Linnea Quigley, actress from Return of the Living Dead. Night of the Demons (1994) picks up a year after where first film left off. Although it managed to recoup its meager costs, the film was considered a commercial flop. Since its initial release, however, it has developed a rather sizable cult following of its own. Unlike its predecessor (which had minimal gore and a documentary-style feel), this film sports a wildly over-the-top, almost operatic sense of campy black humor, as well as an array of gore effects by makeup maestro Joel Harlow, instead of Steve Johnson. It features Ben Stiller's wife Christine Taylor, actress from The Brady Bunch Movie and Zoolander, before she became a major star.
Night of the Demons 3 is a 1997 follow up to the previous two films. It stars Amelia Kinkade, Kristen Holden-Ried, Tara Stone, and Vlasta Vrana and was directed by Jim Kaufman. At the time, this was considered to be the first of several sequels in the series to be produced by Republic Pictures Corporation. However, it was not a success and the franchise was scrapped. It largely ignores the events of the previous sequels, as though it picks up some 20 years after the original. It is sometimes considered by some to be a remake, as the sequence and plots are sometimes scene-for-scene similar to shots in the original. Due to this, and other factors, Night Of The Demons: Demon House has a poor reputation amongst some horror film buffs and critics; but also has a core group of fans who hail it as the best of the series. It stars Tara Stone, before she became a major star.
