The NBBF is a traditional powerhouse in the West African region. The Nigerian national team participated in the FIBA Africa Championship games 14 times, in 1972, 1978, 1980, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2009, Earning three silver and two bronze metals and participated twice in the FIBA World Championship in 1998 and 2006, where they placed 13th and 14th respectively. Recently, the team has enjoyed success due to an orchestrated recruitment of American college and professional players of Nigerian descent. A team dominated by Nigerian-Americans qualified for the 2006 World Championships for only the second time in the country's history, and eight players on the team representing Nigeria in the 2009 Afrobasket tournament (where Nigeria is one of the favorites) are American born.

Nigeria as won the most medals in the All-Africa Games Basketball Tournament, and was recently placed 4th in the 2006 Commonwealth Games falling short to 3rd place England, Nigeria's Mens Basketball team has never played in the Olympics.
