Nicolas Coldstream

John Nicolas Coldstream (30 March 1927 - 21 March 2008) was an archaeologist specialising in the Ancient Greek pottery of the Geometric Period. He was at Bedford College (1960–83), becoming Professor of Aegean Archaeology, and then at University College London. His best known excavation sites are Kythera (Minoan pottery) and Knossos (Knossian pottery).[1]

He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1964, and a Fellow of the British Academy in 1977. He was awarded the British Academy's Kenyon Medal for Classical Studies in 2003.[1] In his obituary The Times called Coldstream "one of the world's leading Classical archaeologists".[1]

Coldstream was educated in Classics at Eton and King's College, Cambridge.[1] He was also an accomplished pianist.[1]
