Early life and education
He was raised in the Bronx and educated in the New York City public schools system. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. He is a graduate of Fordham University and a 1989 graduate of Brooklyn Law School.
He worked for the New York City Police Department, where he served in the Bronx community for almost eight years.
Legal career
Prior to joining the bench, he was an Assistant District Attorney at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office for five years. He then worked as a Law Clerk to a Judge on the New York City Civil Court .
In 1998, he was appointed by then Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman to the Housing part of the New York City Civil Court. In 2001, Román was elected to the New York City Civil Court.
He was a New York Supreme Court Justice, from 2003 to 2009. He was designated a Justice for the Appellate Division, First Judicial Department in 2009 by Governor David Patterson.
He served as President of the Puerto Rican Bar Association from 1997-1998
