Neal King

Neal King is an American psychologist and academic who is President of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, California (www.itp.edu) and former president of Antioch University Los Angeles[1].

Biography

King was born January 3, 1947 in Cocoa Beach, Florida on what was then Banana River Naval Station and today is Cape Canaveral. His father was a career naval officer so his early life was lived in a series of "Navy towns" in Connecticut and California, and became the inspiration for his autobiographical short story "We Moved A Lot," in Abbott, F. [Ed.], (1993). "Boyhood: A Multicultural Anthology", Freedom, CA: Crossing Press.

Neal King received an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.[1] He was awarded a B.A. in English from St. Mary's College of California, and attended the Ecole de Musique in Nice, France and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is a licensed psychologist in California and was a practicing psychologist in Northern California for fourteen years.[1]

The day he was to have taken the LSAT in preparation for law school, he decided instead that his calling was in education. He became a high school English teacher and counselor soon after completing his undergraduate study. As a young educator, King spent two years in the third world in fulfillment of his alternative service requirement as a conscientious objector during the US war with Vietnam. He served as Director of the Lao American Association in Pakse, Laos and as Professeur d' Anglais at Lycee Amirouche in Tizi Ouzou, Algeria.

He later served as a counselor at the American School in London, from 1977-1980. After completing his graduate training at UC Berkeley, King was a professor of psychology and the founding director of the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program at John F. Kennedy University in the San Francisco Bay Area, the founding Orange County, California campus President of the University of Sarasota, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Colorado.[1] In 2004, he became the Academic Dean, and later Interim President, at Antioch University New England.[1]

King's professional writing has been the areas of AIDS/HIV (most recently King, N., “HIV/AIDS + Education: Lessons from the 1980s + the gay male community in the USA.” United Nations Chronicle, Volume XLVIII, Number 1, March 2011), psychological issues for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, issues particular to male survivors and the integration of LGBT content into graduate psychology curricula. He is the author of "Speaking Our Truth: Voices of Courage and Healing for Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse," published in 1995 by HarperPerennial (ISBN 0-06-095058-7).

King has served as an organizational consultant and coach for a variety of educational institutions, in the areas of accreditation, governance and creating optimal efficiencies and organizational systems. He also has a background in the restaurant business since the age of 16, having worked as dishwasher, waiter, bartender, manager and sous chef in a variety of restaurants ranging from simple neighborhood fare to fine dining. He worked briefly as a waiter at Chez Panisse in Berkeley during his years as a graduate student before then going to work for Jeremiah Tower at Santa Fe Bar and Grill in Berkeley and STARS restaurant in San Francisco.

King is Secretary General and a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) (www.iaup.org). He was a founding member of LGBTQ Presidents in Higher Education (www.lgbtqpresidents.org), serves on the Executive Board of Campus Compact California (www.cacampuscompact.org) and the Board of Directors of SONAD, an organization that promotes world peace and understanding across cultures through classical music. He also serves as a volunteer with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

An avid traveler and photographer, King lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his longtime partner Peter Morrison and their two Springer Spaniels.[2]
