Nawab Bahadur

Nawab Bahadur

Javed Khan Nawab Bahadur(1695? - 1754) was an Irani Daroga under the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah. He was head of the Emperor's chief household (1722–1748); under him were his wife Udhambai, Prince Ahmad, and Regent of the Mughal Emperor (1748–1754).

Head Daroga

In 1722, after Emperor Muhammad Shah's several marriages, he appointed Javed Khan as the Daroga of the imperial household. He was excellent for this purpose, being an eunuch[citation needed], and had powerful command over women. Under him, Prince Ahmad, having a strong liking for women, was kept in place and vigorously tutored in Quranic Studies as well as Royal etiquette. At that time he had no lust for power and maintained a friendly relationship with Prince Ahmad, the Crown Prince.

Regent of the State

After the accession of Ahmad Shah Bahadur in 1748, which was achieved by the chastisement of his other brothers by Javed Khan, he was given the title of Nawab Bahadur and given a mansab of 6,000, as well as being made effective regent of the Empire along with the Emperor's mother. However, he was completely unsuited for regency.[citation needed] He gave no support to Mueen-ul-Mulk of Punjab during his wars with Ahmad Shah Durrani.

In 1752, factions at court started quarreling and he, being head of the Irani faction, expelled the Torani Ghaziuddin, which resulted in a full blown civil war in 1753 that lasted for six months. His Irani supporter Nawab Safdar Jang was defeated at the hands of the Marathas under Mir Bakhshi (Head of Military) Ghaziuddin.[citation needed] At this, he prompted the Emperor to take action, who was under his influence. Thus the Imperial Army marched to Sikandarabad but met defeat at the hands of Ghaziuddin in 1754. Nawab Bahadur fled to Delhi but was killed immediately after Ghaziuddin's arrival.[citation needed]
