Gaumee Itthihaad, also known as the National Unity Party or GIP, is headed by Dr. Mohammed Waheed Hassan, the current and first Vice President of Maldives. GIP is a moderate party that is part of the ruling coalition for the Republic of Maldives. Under the coalition agreement with the Maldivian Democratic Party GIP awarded three seats in the cabinet; the Fisheries Ministry, the Education Ministry, and the Ministry for Economic Development and Trade. ^[1] Though these positions have been revoked by the President in contravention of the coalition agreement, the Vice President is still an active member of the government. ^[2]
