Madipakkam ( _ta. மடிப்பாக்கம்) is one among the southern suburbs of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. It is a residential municipality close to the Chennai Airport and is adjacent to the suburbs of Velachery, Nanganallur, Adambakkam, Keelkattalai and Vijaya Nagar.

Temples

A prominent landmark in Madipakkam is the Ayyappan Temple. The Badhala Vinayagar temple is also quite popular. Another well known landmark is the Poniamman Temple. The Sundara Vinayagar temple is a famous temple where people throng during festivals especially during Thirukalaya Utsavam in the month of February and during Vinayagar Chaturthi. The other notable temple in Madipakkam includes the "Bairava Sai Baba " which is in Ganesh Nagar. This temple is quite old and it is believed that 'Bairav' refers to dog and Sai Baba loved dogs. So the name of the temple is " Bairava Sainath". Another main temple in the MRTS Madipakkam area is the Pattabisheka Ramar-Oppiliappan temple in Ram Nagar North where Thirukkalyanam and Vastradharanam are performed on a regular basis.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Madippakkam had a population of 14,940. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Madippakkam has an average literacy rate of 88%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 90%, and female literacy is 85%. In Madippakkam, 9% of the population are under 6 years of age.

Almost every family has a vehicle - usually a two-wheeler - but cars are increasing in number. There are a lot of buses that connect people to the nearest suburban railway station which is St. Thomas Mount. Another suburban railway station near Madipakkam is Pazhavanthangal. Autorickshaws are very commonly used but are considered a little expensive. A few horse carriages still come from St. Thomas Mount station but are seldom seen these days.

Definitely one of the most populous places in Chennai, the real estate prices of this suburb are soaring rapidly by the day. High rise apartments are coming up in huge numbers. It's very rare nowadays to see an independent house being built. This is certainly going to become even worse since the Railway Station at Velachery has started operating. The same is nearer than the St. Thomas Mount Station and is expected to take a major load of commuters from Madipakkam towards the main city. The Inner Ring road project work has started on the Madipakkam side connecting the incomplete leg of 6 km to Ashok Nagar.

Schools

Madipakkam has a number of schools catering to students from Kindergarten to Higher Secondary. Few of them are New Prince Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Holy Family Convent, St.Thomas Matriculation Higher Secondary School ,Brilliant, Rajkumar Sulochana, Sai Matriculation School, Holy Prince, Prince Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Kings Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Holi Prince Matriculation Hr Sec School.

There are about 4 petrol bunks (Brit. English) or gas stations (Amer. English) nearby. The place is pretty much self sufficient with most shops present nearby. One petrol bunk is in sadasivam nagar.

Connectivity

The Madipakkam Main Road is also referred to as Koot Road because, the main landmark on the western side in this suburb is a point where four major roads meet. This name comes from the Tamil word 'kootu' which means 'junction'. Technically its part of the Medavakkam Main Road, but in Madipakkam its just referred to as Koot Road. The Velachery side of Madipakkam is being referred to as the MRTS Madipakkam due to its proximity to the Velachery Railway Station a project under the Mass Rapid Transit System (Chennai).
