Nathaniel Merriman

Nathaniel Merriman

The Rt Rev Nathaniel James Merriman, DD[1] (4 April 1809[2] – 16 August 1882[3]) was the third Bishop of Grahamstown[4] from 1871 [5] until his death.

He was educated at Winchester and Brasenose College, Oxford; and ordained in 1833. He was Curate then Vicar[6] of Street, Somerset[7] until he emigrated to South Africa. He rose to become Archdeacon of Grahamstown then Dean of Cape Town before being elevated the Episcopate. His son was the last prime minister of the Cape Colony before the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910[8].

He was the brother of Frederick Merriman.[9]
