Nano-particle field extraction thruster

Nano-particle field extraction thruster

The Nano-particle field extraction thruster or NanoFET is an experimental high-speed spacecraft engine under development by the University of Michigan.[1] The engine would consist of a series of thousands of small emitters, each working like a tiny particle accelerator. The anode of the emitter would charge nano-particles, which would then be caused to accelerate and shoot out of a tube by a strong magnetic field.

The engine could be capable of propelling spacecraft at up to 90% the speed of light.
