Muslim Jamaat

The term Jamaat (Arabic: جماعتِ ‎) (meaning Assembly), Jamia - gathering or congregate; (place of gathering).

In Southern India, 'Muslim Jamaat' refers to the group of Muslim communities in an area, mainly for the development & welfare of Muslims at that area.

They have a common Juma Mazjid in which they get together for their daily and weekly prayers. They have a common cemetery also.

The head of a 'Muslim Jamaat' is the president who they select or elect from their members and there will be a vice-president, secretary, finance manager and some elected staff.

The main responsibilities of 'Muslim Jamaat' are:

  • Development of members.
  • Arabic & Islamic education for the children.
  • Management and development of (their own) Mosque.
  • Islamically and Legally (according to Indian Law) conducting marriages and other ceremonies of their members.
  • Management of cemetery.
