- Muslim Chauhan (Gujarat)
-
The Muslim Chauhan are a Muslim community found in the state of Gujarat in India.[1]
Origin
The Muslim Chauhan of Gujarat are converts from the Hindu Chauhan caste. Their conversion is said to have occurred during the rule of Mahmud Begada. Traditionally, they were an agrarian community, but now they follow a number of occupations. In customs, they resemble other convert Rajput communities such as the Parmar and Makwana communities. The community is concentrated in north Gujarat, particularly the town of Kalol. Like other Gujarati Muslims, they have a caste association, the Chauhan Jamat, but its influence is much weaker on this community. The Chauhan are Sunni, and many are members of the Deobandi sub-sect. [2]
