Mount Metschel (78°17′S 159°0′E / 78.283°S 159°E) is a prominent ice-free mountain, 1,845 m, standing 4 nautical miles (7 km) southeast of Angino Buttress and the Skelton Icefalls. Mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from ground surveys and Navy air photos. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Commander John J. Metschel, U.S. Navy, commander of the icebreaker USS Staten Island AGB-5 in 1963. Metschel was killed in the Arctic, October 15, 1963, while engaged in ice reconnaissance in a helicopter from his ship.
