Mudgal is a panchayat town in Lingsugur taluk, Raichur district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Mudgal is about 10 miles south-west of Lingsugur. Mudgal was originally a Brahman Rishi (In brahmin there are 7 brahmrishi and two rajrishi. Mudgal was one of the rajrishi. the other one was vishvamitra) known for his generosity and simplicity. He strongly believed in simple living and high thinking. He wrote 1 upnishad out of 108 upnishads called mudgalopnishad.
Mudgal Rishi was very determined and strong willed rishi. In order to get fruits of his religious deeds, he began a yagna to impress the devtas. His wish was to go to Heaven without leaving his body. Indra came to fulfill his wish couldn't as it was not in his boundaries. Rishi again started yagna, likewise all Brahma, Vishnu and Lord Shiva also did not agree his wishes, as it was not possible for them to fulfill. After all these Mudgal Rishi got angry and pulled out his hair and burnt them in yagya kund. Thus, since then the Mudgal Brahmin are never able to grow their ritual Pony (Boddi or jatta) on the very spot where it should be. Usually, get bald due to Mudgal Rishi. Likewise all Mudgalaya, Mudgal, Moudgil, Modgil, Moudgal etc are his progency.
In northern part of India, most families in Kassar Village of Haryana belong to Moudgil Gotra. Usually, Punjabi Brahmin are Moudgils. Some Hide gotra in northern part of India, and put common Brahmin Name Sharma instead.
