Río Negro (English: "Black River") is a
Chile an city and commune inOsorno Province ,Los Lagos Region , 38 km to the south of Osorno and 6 km of 5 Route the South. It has an area of 1,266 km² and a population of 14,732 inhabitants (7,204 women and 7,528 men according to census 2002).The commune is bordered on the north by Osorno,San Juan de la Costa , to the east by
Puerto Octay , the west by thePacific Ocean , and the south by Purranque.Together with the communes of
Puyehue ,Puerto Octay , Purranque,Fresia ,Frutillar ,Llanquihue ,Puerto Varas andLos Muermos the Electoral District Nº 56 and belongs to 17ª Senatorial Circumscription (The South Lakes).The origin of the Río Negro name is
Mapuche , It comes from theMapudungun Curuleufu ( "Curu":Black | "Leufu":River )y also means Black River or Cloudy WatersHistory
In 19th century the Commune was a great property located between "Chahuilco" and Purranque, call "Curileufu" by the natives . It was founded on lands donated by gift from Jose Miguel Alderete, the year 1896. The first inhabitants were indigenous of the zone.
The first Mayor was Pedro González.
