Monsurat Sunmonu (Mrs)[1] is the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Nigeria. She became the first female Speaker in the history of the House on the 10th of June 2011.[2] She is the member of the House of Assembly representing Oyo East and Oyo West.
As an indigene of Oyo town, Oyo State, she contested on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and won all 20 available Wards in her constituencies. Her philanthropic nature led to her rise in Oyo State politics and she is widely known and highly regarded amongst the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom, where she was resident for 25 years. Monsurat Sunmonu is revered as one of the leading women in Nigeria.[3]
Monsurat Sunmonu is the daughter of Late Pa Akeeb Alagbe Sunmonu and Late Princess Amudalat Jadesola Sunmonu (nee Afonja) and is of royal decent in Oyo kingship.
