She won the parliamentary elections and was appointed on 12th November 2010 following the death of former Vice President, Angidi Chettiar. She was elected unanimously by all members of the National Assembly to serve also as First woman as Vice President of the Country .[1] She was a member of the Mauritian Labor Party and later became the President of the Party . She is the grand daughter of Bartholomée Ohsan who was a founding member of the party. She is a journalist by profession and also was a News Annnouncer on the National TV Channel, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation.
She was married to Yves Joseph Bellepeau who was a businessman and who died 3 days after she was sworn in as Vice President. He died on the 16h of November 2010.
She took oath at State House (0fficial Residence of the President), Réduit on Saturday morning. On the same day, she was called on to be the Acting President soon after the President, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, left for India in the evening.
In 2009, she was decorated by President Jugnauth as Grand Officer of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. She therefore uses the honorific suffix (GOSK).[2]
