MOMIX is a company of dancer-illusionists known internationally for presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty. For 30 years, MOMIX has been celebrated for its ability to conjure up a world of surrealistic images using props, light, shadow, humor and the human body. Under the direction of founder Moses Pendleton, MOMIX has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Denmark, England, Austria, Ireland, Holland, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. The company's Associate Director, Cynthia Quinn, has danced with the company since the mid-1980s. In addition to its artistic distinctiveness, Momix is unusual among contemporary dance companies for being a for-profit organization, for being based in Washington, Connecticut, in the state's rural northwest, and for being named after a feed supplement for veal calves. The name also suggests 'a mixture of things by Moses.'

Repertoire

MOMIX's repertoire includes:

Orbit - This piece creates a fantasy world of altered gravity through a marriage of dance and acrobatics, assisted by ingenious props (including a Sputnik-like device that give the evening its name) and illusionistic costumes.

Baseball - Baseball is Moses Pendleton's multimedia tribute to America's national pastime with music by James Brown, Queen, Loreena McKennitt, and Ali Farka Toure, among others.

Passion - Uniting two creators - Moses Pendleton and Peter Gabriel, Passion uses multimedia dance theater to express exotic, ecstatic imagery set to a strong score.

Opus Cactus - Inspired by the austere but evocative desert landscape of the American Southwest, Opus Cactus brings native flora and fauna to life by day and night.

Lunar Sea - This piece is a continuum of light, darkness, and illusion. On and above a stage lit by black light, dancers in cunningly designed costumes appear to float and fly, assembling their limbs in never-before-seen ways.

reMIX - These compilations of some of Momix's most memorable and original work are sewn together seamlessly to provide a fun, high-energy evening that teases, surprises, and amazes.

Botanica - The latest work from the company is an immersion in the natural world, as viewed through Moses Pendleton's mythic but playful imagination, with props and costumes designed in part by Michael Curry. It's a journey through the four seasons that showcases Momix's most ambitious multimedia work to date.

Theatre, film and television

The company has participated in the "Homage a Picasso" in Paris and was selected to represent the United States at the European Cultural Center at Delphi. In 1992, Pendleton created "Bat Habits," developed with the support of the Scottsdale (Arizona) Cultural Council/Scottsdale Center for the Arts and the University of Washington to celebrate the opening of the San Francisco Giants’ new spring training park in Scottsdale, Arizona. This work was the forerunner of “Baseball,” which was created by Pendleton in 1994. MOMIX has made five Italian RAI television features broadcast to 55 countries (including the USSR and China) and has performed on Antenne II in France. MOMIX was also featured in PBS’s “Dance in America” series. MOMIX dancers Cynthia Quinn and Karl Baumann played the role of “Bluey” in the film “FX II,” under the direction of Moses Pendleton. The company was featured on Canadian television with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony in the Rhombus Media film of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”, winner of an International Emmy for Best Performing Arts Special. MOMIX is featured in one of the first IMAX films in 3-D, “IMAGINE,” which premiered at the Taejon Expo 93 and was subsequently released at IMAX theaters world-wide. In 2004, “White Widow”, co-choreographed by Pendleton and Cynthia Quinn, was featured in Robert Altman’s movie, “The Company.”

Corporate Work

Momix has created special shows for product launches as well as commercials for major corporations seen on national TV. Clients have included Mercedes, Fiat, BMW, Kohler, Hanes, Target Stores, Walmart, and MAC Cosmetics.
