Mohua Mukherjee

Dr. Mohua Mukherjee was born in August 1952. She was a creative person as a child, enjoying painting, clay modeling and poetry. She is descended from a Kolkata family , her schooling was at Gokhale. She married Alok Mukherjee in 1974.

After marriage she took a freelance job at Hotel Oberoi Grand–Kolkata as an interior decorator.

Due to her first child she did not continue that job and joined St. Thomas Kidderpore as an art teacher. She started an art school at home for children, named ‘Rekhae Chonde’. She combined the art school with Indian classical dancing, the combination called“Rekahe”–for Painting and “Chonde”–for Dancing.

She also created a ‘Dance Drama Group” in Kolkata named “Roopkatha”..

She also started Journalism and moved into article writing in newspapers and magazines such as “Ulto Rath”, “Shanonda”, “AnandaBazar Patrika”, “Bartaman” and “AajKaal”.

She started social work through projects with UNICEF, UNESCO, WILD[disambiguation needed ], AIIPH, WHO, ICEF[disambiguation needed ], etc. though her own NGO named “Sanyog Audio Visual and Welfare Society working for the homeless, ill health, mother and child, etc. in urban and rural areas of West Bengal. She developed an interest on Tribal life and joined the movement for the welfare of tribes in rural Bengal and adjacent areas.

Her other achievements include social activist, writer, documentary and short film maker, artist, theatre person, socio-economic researcher on tribes of India. She is also founder of an NGO named Sanyog Audio Visual.

Books written by her include "Lal Maati Shaal Bon", "Gohin Manush He", "Chandoi Birhor", "Birhor towards next Millennium", etc.
