Muhammad Abdullah Salique (or Mohammed Abdus Salique), was the mayor of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets from 2008-2009.[1] He was replaced by Councillor Ahmed Omer, the first Somali mayor in Tower Hamlets and London.

Biography

Salique moved to Tower Hamlets, east London as a child from the Sylhet region of Bangladesh. He attended a primary school in Spitalfields. He is a qualified youth, community and social worker within the borough, including working and teaching with young people at Tower Hamlets College. Salique has been a local councillor since 2002, representing the Labour Party and ward member of Bethnal Green North. He enjoys sports activities such as football, badminton, and swimming.[2] He is married to Razia Begum Salique,[3] with five children.

Salique was appointed as the new mayor of Tower Hamlets on 22 May 2008, and his deputy appointed was Ahmed Omer - a Bow East councillor.[4] He is the fifth Bangladeshi mayor of the borough. His new position is to chair council meetings and promote and support the borough through a variety of civic engagements, including representing the Queen as First Citizen of the borough, hosting events and welcoming visitors such as other Royals of all ships visiting the local docks.

As the mayor of Tower Hamlets he has represented himself in many awards and ceremonies. On 22 July 2008 he has presented people with British citizen certificates at a Citizenship Ceremony at Banqueting House, in Whitehall. The ceremony involed forty people from different countries pledging an oath of allegiance to the Queen.[5] He has also visited the Billingsgate Market at the fish market run by the City Corporation, with Lord Mayor of the City of London David Lewis which he paid the traditional rent of one salmon to Salique.[6] Salique selected the Child Concern Consortium as his Charity of the Year,[7] and invited the charity to the Christmas Charity Ball at the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf.[8] He has also attended the Award Ceremony of the Brick Lane Youth Development Association (BLYDA) and Elite Youth on 28 May 2008 at Mulberry School for Girls.[9]
