The following is a list of characters for the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series, Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. Where appropriate, names from English language media are on the left whilst the original Japanese names are on the right. Character descriptions pertain to the Japanese version of the anime.

Main characters
- Yuma Tsukumo (九十九 遊馬 Tsukumo Yūma )
- Voiced by: Tasuku Hatanaka (Japanese), Eli Jay (English)
- The main protagonist,[1] a cheerful and energetic boy who is an underachiever in both school and duels, but always takes on any challenge and never gives up, an ethic he dubs "Feeling the Flow" or "Kattobing" (かっとビング Kattobingu ). He wears a special key given to him by his traveling parents, which manages to unlock a door to another dimension, where he encounters Astral. He uses a Deck given to him by his father, despite for some reason, his family is against him dueling. His ace card is "Number 39: Utopia", which is later able to be evolved into "Chaos Number 39: Utopia Ray". He soon obtains the power of Zexal, which allows him to fuse his soul with Astral's and utilise Zexal Weapons for his monsters.
- Astral (アストラル Asutoraru )
- Voiced by: Miyu Irino (Japanese), Marc Thompson (English)
- A mysterious spirit that Yuma encounters, who only Yuma can see or hear. He offers his wisdom to Yuma, whose duel tactics are lacking, in order to obtain the 100 Numbers Cards which contain fragments of his memories.[2] A calculating person, Astral makes a list of his observations of Yuma and other human behaviors. Astral resides in a special world that exists within Yuma's key, featuring a strange ship whose parts become unlocked as Astral collects more Numbers cards.
- Ryoga "Shark" Kamishiro (神代・"シャーク"・凌牙 Kamishiro "Shāku" Ryōga )
- Voiced by: Toshiki Masuda (Japanese), Gary Mack (English)
- Yuma's rival who was originally a championship duelist before he was disqualified for peeking at his opponents cards, eventually becoming a delinquent. During his duel against Yuma, he is briefly possessed by the Number card, "Number 17: Leviathan Dragon", but Astral takes it from him after Yuma defeats him. Like his namesake, he uses a deck filled with fish-type monsters, his key card being "Black Ray Lancer", a card capable of destroying Numbers, which can normally only be destroyed by other Numbers.
- Tori Meadows / Kotori Mizuki (観月 小鳥 Mizuki Kotori )
- Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu (Japanese), Eileen Stevens (English)
- Yuma's classmate and childhood friend. She has a D-Gazer to see Yuma duel in Augumented Reality Duels. She is shown to never leave his side, no matter what the circumstances, and seems to harbor a crush on Yuma. She is also intelligent, and good with computers. She has developed a rivalry with Cathy for Yuma's affections.
- Bronk Stone / Tetsuo Takeda (武田 鉄男 Takeda Tetsuo )
- Voiced by: Makoto Shimada (Japanese), Sean Schemmel (English)
- Yuma's friend and a skilled duelist, but was defeated by Shark in the first episode. He is known to have defeated Yuma about 20 times already, and speculates if Astral really exists. Despite his harsh behaviour toward Yuma, it is obvious he regards him as a friend. He often rides around on a skateboard.

Yuma's family
- Kari Tsukumo / Akari Tsukumo (九十九 明里 Tsukumo Akari )
- Voiced by: Nami Miyahara (Japanese), Rebecca Soler (English)
- Yuma's older sister, who works from home as a reporter and is always looking for a scoop. She is generally against Yuma dueling as she is often worried about his safety.
- Haru Tsukumo (九十九 春 Tsukumo Haru )
- Voiced by: Ikuko Tani (Japanese), Kathryn Cahill (English)
- Yuma and Kari's grandmother, who has been looking after them with their parents on business trips. She is often kind but will occasionally get strict over certain matters.
- Kazuma Tsukumo (九十九 一馬 Tsukumo Kazuma )
- Voiced by: Ichiro Mikami
- Yuma and Kari's father, who is the original owner of Yuma's deck. During a dangerous expedition, he encountered a being from the Astral World and was given the King's Key, which he later gave to Yuma to give him courage.
- Mirai Tsukumo (九十九未来 Tsukumo Mirai )
- Voiced by: Eri Miyajima
- Yuma and Kari's mother, who often goes on travels with Kazuma.

- Caswell / Takashi Todoroki (等 々力孝 Todoroki Takashi )
- Voiced by: Taishi Murata (Japanese), Jason Anthony Griffith (English)
- The class president in Yuma's class. He tends to add "in the end" to his statements, even when it is not neccessarily a summary.
- Flip / Tokunosuke Otomeura (表裏徳 之助 Otomeura Tokunosuke )
- Voiced by: Aki Kanada (Japanese), Matt Hoverman (English)
- A wily kid who often notes that everything in the world has a flipside. Having been bullied when he was younger, Tokunosuke had learned to play dirty in order to win duels. However, after Yuma beats him a duel, he learns to be more friendly. His deck mainly consists of monsters that use Flip Effects, and he has a habit of ending his sentences with "ura", meaning "reversed".
- Cathy (キャッシー Kyasshī )
- Voiced by: Yu Kobayashi (Japanese), ??? (English)
- Known as Cat for short, Cathy is a shy girl who has a crush on Yuma but doesn't stand out too well in class. As a result she sometimes snuck into Yuma's room to do various things while he was asleep. She is slightly more confident as a duelist, using a Cat themed deck. She allegedly has the ability to communicate with cats.

- Obomi (オボミ )
- Voiced by: Yuko Sanpei
- An assumedly female Trashbot that was originally programmed to assist in burglaries. When it got damaged during a getaway, it was found and repaired by Yuma and his friends and now lives with Yuma's family. She uses a Trashbot Deck consisting of animals made from run down appliances.
- Fuya Okudaira (奥平 風也 Okudaira Fūya ) / Esper Robin (エスパー・ロビン Esupā Robin )
- Voiced by: Yuichi Iguchi (Japanese), Wayne Grayson (English)
- A child actor who plays the lead role in a television show. Unlike the character he portrays, Fuya is rather timid and is scared easily, often feeling lonely that he has to hide his true self to maintain his public image. He becomes possessed by the Numbers card, Number 83: Galaxy Queen, and starts causing trouble as his alter ego. His deck uses monsters based on characters from his show, his key card being Star Robin.
- Rokojuro (六十郎 )
- Voiced by: Shōichirō Akaboshi
- An old acquaintance of Haru who runs a Duel Lodge where people learn to respect Duel Monsters.
- Anna Kozuki (神月アンナ Kōzuki Anna )
- Voiced by: Rei Mochizuki
- A former classmate of Yuma and Tori who supposedly had a crush on Yuma, but later realised that the boy she actually liked was someone else with a similar name. She carries around a large rocket launcher that can also be used as a hoverjet, which she tends to have trouble controlling properly. She uses a Railroad deck which focuses on summoning high level monsters and dealing effect damage.

- An evil man who wishes to take control of all the Numbers and destroy Astral World.
- Kaito Tenjo (天城カイト Tenjō Kaito )
- Voiced by: Koki Uchiyama
- A Numbers Hunter who is collecting Numbers for Dr. Faker in order to help his sick brother, Haruto. Assisted by a robot named Orbital-7, he has the ability to stop time for everyone except those that possess Numbers. Unlike Astral, whenever he removes a Numbers from a defeated opponent, he also takes their soul, leaving their body withered. He possesses several Numbers cards while his key card is Galaxy Eyes Photon Dragon, an effect monster that gets stronger against Xyz monsters. As of Episode 17 Astral has accepted that he is frightend of Kaito.
- Haruto Tenjo (天城ハルト Tenjō Haruto )
- Voiced by: Yuuko Sanpei
- Kaito's younger brother who can create paths to other realities. He has been using this ability to send trash collected from Heartland City to attack Astral's homeworld.
- Mr. Heartland (Mr.ハートランド Misutā Hātorando )
- Voiced by: Jurota Kosugi
- Mr. Heartland is the person in charge of relaying Dr. Faker's orders to Kaito Tenjo and is the current Mayor of Heartland and might be one of the antagonists along with Dr. Faker.
- Orbital 7 (オービタル7 Obitaru Sebun )
- Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno
- Kaito's robotic assistance.
- Tron (トロン Toron )
- Voiced by: Sachi Kokuryū
- A mysterious masked child who is plotting something during the WDC.
- Four (IV Fō )
- Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya
- A red haired man working for Tron. He was the opponent Shark once faced in a national tournament, who had arranged for him to be disqualified.
Duelists
World Duel Carnival
- Kakeru Kunitachi (国立カケル Kunitachi Kakeru )
- Voiced by: Mitsuki Saiga
- The first opponent Yuma faces in the World Duel Carnival, Kakeru is the younger brother of a pair of talented soccer players who quit soccer because he couldn't get along with others. However, he still hold a dormant love for soccer, represented by his Soccer Deck and a soccer ball made out of Duel Monsters cards.
- Shobey Yuatsu (油圧ショーベェ Yuatsu Shōbē )
- Voiced by: Motoko Kumai
- A young kid who uses a Heavy Machinery deck, often relying on power to make up for his short height.
- Housaku Yasai (矢最豊作 Yasai Hōsaku )
- Voiced by: Kenji Nomura
- A chubby duelist who loves vegetables, especially tomatoes, and grows his own vegetables. He participates in the World Duel Carnival to fulfil his dreams of one day making a tomato-themed amusement park, and challenges opponents using a 'Vegetable Deathmatch' rule, in which players must eat a vegetable in order to attack. He uses a Tomato Deck, his key monster being Red Red King.
- Charlie McCoy (チャーリーマッコイ Chārī Makkoi )
- Voiced by: Daisuke Himakawa
- A former acquaintance of Kazuma, who was romantically involved with Kari, Charlie is a thief who has an extroadinary amount of luck. He uses a Casino Deck that focus on gamble tactics and possesses the Numbers card, No. 7 Lucky Stripe.
Number Holders
- Mr. K / Ukyo Kitano (北野右京 Kitano Ukyō )
- Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno (Japanese), Darren Dunstan (English)
- Yuma's teacher who was possessed by the Numbers card, Number 34: Terror-Byte. He is quite knowledgeable about hacking and is able to create viruses, though his true intentions are to spread joy to others. He uses a Crash Bug deck.
- Rikuo (陸王 Rikuō ) and Kaio (海王 Kaiō )
- Voiced by: Daisuke Kirii and Kenji Fukuda
- A pair of brothers who head up an underground group of delinquents that Ryoga hangs around with. They become possessed by the Numbers cards Number 61: Volcasaurus and Number 19: Freezerdon respectively and attempt to steal a priceless deck, but are thwarted by Yuma and Ryoga in a tag duel. They use cheating techniques in order to know how to play off each others' cards.
- Jin (ジン )
- A Number Hunter who uses traps and illusions to outwit his opponents.
- Yamikawa (闇川 )
- A former student of Rokujuro's Duel Lodge, who was possessed by Number 12: Armored Ninja - Crimson Shadow.

- Tetsumi is Bronk and Tetsuko's mother.
