Mistry, or Mistri, is a surname found in people of India or Indian origin. Gujarat and Rajasthan are origin state of Mistrys. This surname is used by many different communities of India.

Mistri or Mistry is seldom used as surname by Mistri community known as Mistris and their branch communities like Kadia or Gurjar Kshatriyas, who are involved in masonry and construction works. As you can find only few families, from this community, have adopted Mistri, their cast identity as their surname.

They mostly prefer to use their original Kshatriya clan Surnames, like Rathor, Chavda, Solanki, Jethwa, Parmar, Chauhan, Vaghela, Taunk, etc.[1][2]

By Kadia Kshatriyas

The Mistry surname is again seldom used by Kadia and Kadia Kshatriyas of Saurahstra. They like Mistris of Kutch prefer to use their clan surnames like Chauhan, Solanki, Taunk, Parmar, Chavda, Rathor, Chotalia, Makwana, etc.[3] In this community use of surname Kadia is of more use as occupational surname rather than Mistri.

By Suthar Community

But rather, Mistry is used as surname more often by Suthar community of Gujarat and Rajasthan. it is common surname found among them.[4][5]

By Parsi Community

Mistri or Mistry is also a common surname in Parsi community of India. Again that is a surname adopted by them due to professional reason, as said earlier, the word Mistri or Mistry in Gujarati language is identified as people involved in Building Construction. And Parsi community as is known have their roots in Gujarat.

By Muslim Kadia

Mistry or Mistri is also a surname found among Muslim Kadia community living in Kutch and Saurashtra region of Gujarat. Many of them even today use the surname Mistry, which was actually their community or professional identity before they converted to Islam. Many members of their community using Mistry as surname can be found living today in Zanzibar, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Muscat, Maldives, etc., where they have migrated more than a century ago.[6][7]
