Life and work
Kawabata was born in Tokyo in 191. He graduated from Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts in 1934. He studied in Paris and Italy 1937-39. Beginning in 1950 he taught art at the Tam University, Tokyo; he was a professor of art there until 1955. At the New School for Social Research in New York City he taught for three years until 1961. Having spent two years in Japan he returned to New York.[1] He painted in an Abstract Expressionist style in the 1950s and in a colour field style after the 1960s.[2]
