Distribution
It is native to the Sierra Nevada and nearby slopes and flats in California and western Nevada, where it grows in disturbed, open, and bare, rocky habitat.
Description
It is a small, hairy annual herb growing at ground level or erect to a maximum height near 15 centimeters. The oppositely arranged leaves are linear or lance-shaped and up to 3 centimeters in length. The leaves emit an unpleasant scent when crushed, the characteristic that earned the plant its name.[1]
The trumpet-shaped flower may be up to 2 centimeters long and has an upper lip with two lobes and a lower lip with three. The flower is maroon or yellow, and a population may have both types. The lower lip of the flower is marked with purplish lines and spots.
