Mike Richmond (musician)

Mike Richmond (b. Feb. 26, 1948, Philadelphia) is an American jazz bassist.

Richmond played guitar as a youth but picked up bass during high school. He attended Temple University and taught and played locally in the late 1960s. In the 1970s he began playing with Chico Hamilton and Arnie Lawrence extensively, and also worked with Stan Getz, Jack DeJohnette, Horace Silver, Hubert Laws, Franco Ambrosetti, Dannie Richmond, and Gil Evans. Starting in 1980 Richmond devoted time to learning the sitar, traveling to India and perfrorming live with Ravi Shankar. He led Mingus Dynasty (replacing Mingus himself) from 1980 to 1985, and began teaching at New York University in the 1990s, where he is still on faculty. He additionally teaches at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.
