Michael "Mike" Calvin born 3 August 1957, is an award winning journalist and writer.
His third book "Family: Life, Death and Football" is due for release in October 2010. Calvin was given unprecedented access to every aspect of the activities of Millwall FC throughout their 2009/2010 playoff winning season. He reported for pre-season training, and was on the substitutes' bench at Wembley 333 days later.[1]
Calvin established a global reputation during a twelve year spell as Chief Sportswriter on the Daily Telegraph. He held similar positions at The Times and Mail on Sunday, and is current columnist for the Sunday Mirror.[2]
He has twice been named Sportswriter of the Year, twice named Sports Reporter of the Year and has been honoured at the British Press awards on six other occasions. He has worked in more than 80 countries, covering every major sports event and such seminal news events as the release of Nelson Mandela.
He took a four year sabbatical from journalism to help set up and run the English Institute of Sport, which provides strategic support to 35 Olympic sports.[3]
His first book, Cricket Captaincy, was published in 1979. His second, Only Wind and Water, was a result of his participation in a round the world yacht race.
Integr8 Communications, his consultancy, has involved work for BT, UK Sport, the Premier League, Football Foundation, SportsAid and a wide range of governing bodies of sport. Calvin has also worked closely with the Tony Blair Sports Foundation and Concept2, for whom he has developed programmes designed to combat childhood inactivity and obesity.
Michael is also a prolific blogger on the internet.
Originally from the Watford area, Michael has lived in Bedfordshire for over 20 years, with his wife and four children.
He lists his hobby, in his Who's Who entry, as " innocent adventure".
