It is managed by the Irish Government's Health Service Executive and provides acute-care hospital services, including an 8am-8pm emergency department,[1] for the population of County Clare. In 2008, the hospital served 12,295 out-patients, and 5,067 in-patients, with an average stay of 5.8 nights.[1] 94.4% of admissions were made via the accident and emergency department or 4,736 patients. In 2007, 19,252 patients presented to the emergency department. The hospital saw 2,075 day cases in the same year.[1]

The hospital provides 102 beds, of which 96 are in-patient acute beds, while 6 are reserved for acute day cases.[1] In-patient services include general medicine, general surgery, accident and emergency, geriatrics, otorhinolaryngology, urology, vascular surgery, gynaecology, anaesthesia, radiology.[1]
