Mick McAteer (born 19th November, 1962) is a noted consumer campaigner and member of the Financial Services Authority Board- joining in November 2009. He is the founder and Director of The Financial Inclusion Centre.
He was formerly Principal Policy Adviser for Which? (formerly the Consumers' Association) the largest consumer organisation in Europe. He formulated the organisation's policy on financial services amongst other things.
He holds a number of other positions including Board member of The Financial Reporting Council's Professional Oversight Board, member of the Consultative Panels of the Committee of European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Supervisors (CEIOPS) and the Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS); and member of Nottingham University Business School Financial Services Research Forum Steering Group. He was formerly Non-executive Director of The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS), Chair of the European Commission Financial Users Panel (FINUSE), and is a Fellow of The School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE).
Early Life
McAteer was born in Derry, Northern Ireland. He grew up in the Creggan Estate in Derry, and experienced the troubles in Northern Ireland while growing up. His family were Irish nationalists. He attended St. Columb's College. After leaving school, he worked as a builder in Northern Ireland. He then emigrated to London permanently in 1986 to look for work (as there were few jobs available in Derry). He worked in Biddy Mulligan's pub in Kilburn and as a labourer for a time, before getting a job in London's Financial District, working for Henderson and Framlington Fund Management Companies in the early 1990's.
Personal Life
Mick McAteer is married and has one son from a previous relationship. He lives in the Stoke Newington area of Hackney, London. He is a Roman Catholic and has contributed to the book: 'Christian Perspectives on the Financial Crash' alongside notable people such as Archbishop Vincent Nichols and Lord Griffiths of Fforestfac. Unlike most people in his line of work, Mick McAteer never went to University.
