Michael the Maven

Michael the Maven (Michael Andrew Shiffler, or Michael Andrew) is an American photographer and photography instructor. Michael established one of the first free online photography schools.[1] He is also an award winning instructor at the University level in the field of Biology.[2]

Michael the Maven has conducted dozens of seminars for professional and aspiring photographers all over the United States. He has produced eight instructional photography videos covering technical photographic techniques, instructional guides for multiple Canon camera models (Canon EOS 40D, Canon EOS 50D, Canon 7D, Canon Rebel T1i, Canon Rebel XSi, and Canon 580 and 430 EX II Speedlite), and Photoshop techniques.[3] Each Michael the Maven video carries the title “Crash Course.” Michael the Maven instructional clips on youtube have been viewed over 1.3 million times.[4]

Michael Andrew’s photography is characterized by unique after-effects which can cause his photographs to resemble paintings or sketches. He also uses light, motion, and differing exposures to create his signature look.[5]

Though Michael usually shoots professionally on Canon cameras, his most recognized image was taken on his iPhone while working as a volunteer aid worker in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti after the 2010 Haiti earthquake that devastated much of that region. The subject was Evans Monsigrace, a Haitian rice vendor who reportedly survived 27 days in the rubble and who was discovered, still alive, during cleanup efforts. Mr. Monsigrace was brought into a clinic where Michael was working. Michael the Maven was the first to report the news via his CNN iReport account.[6]
