Club career
Liddle started his footballing career with Sunderland, who he joined as a youth player.[1] At Sunderland he progressed through the youth side, until he was given a professional contract ahead of the 2008–09 season.[1] On 14 November 2008 he secured a loan deal at Carlisle United, where he joined up with Graham Kavanagh, who was also on loan at Carlisle from Sunderland.[2] His debut for the Cumbrians came the following day, as he played against Brighton on 15 November 2008, as Carlisle won 3–1.[3] On 5 August 2010, Liddle signed a 4-month loan deal with Leyton Orient. Liddle returned to Sunderland on 8 September due to injury which hampered the first month of his loan. On 6 January 2011, Liddle joined Gateshead on a 28 day loan.[4] Liddle made his debut for Gateshead on 8 January 2011, scoring his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw against Kidderminster Harriers,[5] which was voted Gateshead's goal of the season.[6] On 31 January 2011, Liddle's loan deal at Gateshead was extended to the end of the 2010–11 season.[7]
International career
Liddle, although born in England, qualifies to play for Ireland due to his Irish mother.[8] After playing in the under-18s and under-19s for his country, Liddle made the step up to Ireland's under-21 side. He was called up into the Ireland squad for a friendly against Austria under-21. At this stage he had not made an appearance for his club, Sunderland, after being signed on a professional contract in the 2008–09 season.[9] Sunderland manager, Roy Keane, said "The young players have done well, It's a real plus for us and I have no doubts that some of them will be able to handle it at the top level" following his call-up. On 19 August 2008, he made his under-21 debut against Austria, where they drew 1–1.[10] Liddle expressed his surprise after the call up, saying "I really didn't expect it, The call-up came as a big surprise so when I was named in the starting eleven I [sic] buzzing!".[8] He made further appearances against Bulgaria, Portugal and Germany.[11][12][13]
