Merger Island

Merger Island (70°6′S 71°13′W / 70.1°S 71.217°W / -70.1; -71.217) is an ice-covered island 3 nautical miles (6 km) long at the entrance to Haydn lnlet, off the west coast of Alexander Island. First mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. The name given by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) is descriptive, the island being almost submerged in the surrounding ice shelf.
