Melaleuca pancheri is a shrub or small tree species which is endemic to New Caledonia. It grows up to 10 metres high, has a rounded canopy and develops a thick, papery bark.[2] Younger branchlets are covered with dense hairs. The leaves have short petioles, rounded tips and tapering bases. They are 40 to 70 mm long and 10 to 15 mm wide. Younger leaves are hairy and silvery-grey in colour. Bright yellow inflorescences are produced throughout the year, followed by pubescent capsules.[2]

It occurs in moist forest and scrub in the south of the main island at altitudes between 100 and 700 metres.[2]

The species was first formally described in 1864 in Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France and named Callistemon pancheri. In 1998, the species was transferred to the genus Melaleuca.[1]
