McAvock a history of the name in Ireland. The name McAvock, commonly believed to be an Irish surname, is more likely to be of Scottish origin. During the plantation of Ulster controlled by King James I of England and VI of Scotland around 1609, a family of McAvocks are believed to have travelled to Ulster under instruction of King James. It is believed that the McAvock family were given land confiscated from the Irish chieftains of the Uí Néill and Uí Domhnaill families. The Mcavock family were thought to have been eventually turned on by their fellow British occupiers for being lazy and useless. It is believed that some of the McAvock family fled to western parts of County Mayo.
