Current

As a Lady Mayor is currently presiding, the Office of the Mayoress is currently held by the Mayors Consort, Mr Albert Bradley who took up office on May 25, 2011

Origins

There is no official role on being the Mayoress of Wigan, however over the years the role of Mayoress has played an active part in the daily activity of the Mayoralty, attending events and engagements with the Mayor, attending awards ceremonies, visiting local schools in the area, as well as playing the hostess for local charities and British or foreign dignitaries who visit the borough. The Mayoress in office also assists with the fundraising of the sponsored charities chosen by the Mayor

When the elected Mayor is not married, another councillor is elected to serve as Mayoress in the term of one year. If there is a Lady Mayor in office then the partner of the Mayor would take on the style of 'Mayor's Consort' or as in the past a female relative of the Lady Mayor's family may take the role of the Mayoress.

Deputy-Mayoress of Wigan

The wife of the Deputy-Mayor of Wigan takes the office of the Deputy-Mayoress of Wigan, assisting the deputy-mayor on official ceremonies and engagements, as well as the Mayor and Mayoress. If the Deputy-Mayor is unmarried, another councillor will be elected to take the office of deputy-mayoress, and if a lady deputy-mayor is elected, their partner would take the office with the style of 'The Deputy-Mayors Consort'

Currently in office: The Deputy-Mayors Consort, Mr John Hurst after his partner was elected Deputy-Mayor on May 25, 2011

Style and title

The official style of the current consort is: The Mayors Consort, Mr Albert Bradley. When referring to the Mayoress it can be simply 'Mayoress' or 'Madam Mayoress' and when presenting the person in office can simply be announced as 'The Mayoress of Wigan [name]'

When there is a Lady Mayor in office, their husband may be styled as 'The Mayor's Consort [name]' and they are simply referred to be their name e.g. Mr Smith, if the Lady Mayors husband is a councillor himself then he would be referred to as 'Councillor [name]'
