Maxon Crumb

Maxon Crumb

Maxon Crumb (born 1945) is an American artist and the younger brother of underground cartoonist Robert Crumb. He currently lives at the Windsor Hotel on Sixth Street in San Francisco and has lived there since about 1980.[1]

Maxon initially started painting as a way to deal with his own personal demons. However, he has subsequently come to utilize it to support himself, replacing his previous need to panhandle.[2]

Maxon's early work can be found in comics such as Weirdo and Liquidator. Since the publication of Maxon's Poe (1997) and HardCore Mother (2001) his first novel, his work has started to find a wider audience.[3]

Paintings and ink drawings can take weeks or months to complete. During this time Maxon says that he will enter into an intense creative state where the work becomes paramount, to the detriment of normal everyday concerns including eating.[2]

Maxon's work can sell for as much as $3,200 with his ink drawings fetching $1,200.[2]

His first published novel, HardCore Mother (2000) was a study of incest and sadism.[3]

Maxon practices celibacy and has done for many years since, as he has explained in interviews, sex triggers epileptic seizures.[2]
