Gawn was selected with the 34th overall pick in the 2009 AFL Draft by the Melbourne Demons. He was recruited from the Sandringham Dragons. The position of where Gawn was to be taken in the draft was the course of much speculation due to his almost unique size.[1]
Gawn, at a height of 208 cm, is the second tallest AFL player, behind Fremantle's ruckman Aaron Sandilands, who is 211 cm.
