Matty Hughes is a professional football player currently playing centre half for Conference National Team Fleetwood Town.[1]

He was born in Salford, Greater Manchester on 1 April 1992.[2]

He began his football career at Rochdale, progressing to the reserve side whilst still at secondary school. He attracted the attention of a number of Premier League clubs, most notably Liverpool.[citation needed] At 16 years old and on leaving school he opted to sign for Celtic. In July 2008 he signed a 3 year professional contract with the Glasgow club.[3][4]

Hughes went on to captain the Celtic youth side to back to back doubles winning both the Scottish FA Cup and Scottish Premier League in 2009/10 and 2010/11. [5]

In 2009, the Scottish Premier League abolished its reserve league limiting the development of young players into the first team squads.[6]

Hughes regularly featured in Neil Lennon's development squad and made his senior debut in the John Kennedy Testimonial Game against Finns Harp in Donegal on 6th March 2011.[7]

In May 2011 following interest from a number of English League clubs he opted to sign for Fleetwood Town.[8]
