Matt Winkler

Matthew Winkler (born 1955) is an American businessman and journalist, currently Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of Bloomberg News, part of Bloomberg L.P.[1]

Winkler is co-author of Bloomberg by Bloomberg and the author of The Bloomberg Way: A Guide for Reporters and Editors.

Early life

Matthew Winkler was born June 1, 1955[2] in New York City and grew up in Grand View, New York.[3] Winkler went on to study at Kenyon College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in history and earned an honorary doctorate of law.[4]

Start In Journalism

Winkler began his journalism career with the Mount Vernon News while still a student at Kenyon College. Following two years as editor of the Collegian, his college paper, he worked at the Mount Vernon News part-time during his junior year, full-time during his senior year, and for a time after graduation. Winkler called the lessons he learned while at the Mount Vernon News "invaluable."[5]

Career

Journalism Career

Winkler began his career in journalism as a reporter for the Mount Vernon News in 1976, followed by a stint as a public relations specialist at Gehrung Associates.[6] Winkler went on to be a columnist for Forbes Magazine, a reporter in London and New York for the Wall Street Journal, and founding editor/reporter for Dow Jones Capital Markets Report. After working at the Wall Street Journal for 10 years,[7] Winkler left to work at Bloomberg in 1990.[8]

Bloomberg

Under Winkler’s direction, Bloomberg News has grown to include more than 1,500 editors and reporters in 146 bureaus serving print and broadcast media throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. The news services produces more than 5,000 stories daily on the economy, companies, governments, financial and commodity markets as well the arts and sports. Winkler has also recruited, trained and placed over 600 business journalists in Bloomberg bureaus throughout the world.[9]

Michael Bloomberg has praised Winkler for his "excellent work", saying, "The quality of our journalism is the best and Winkler is the reason."[10] In 1996, Business News Reporter ranked Winkler number seven among its ninety-six most influential journalists that year. Michael Bloomberg was named number two.[11][12]

Awards and Honors

Winkler is a trustee of Kenyon College and The Kenyon Review, chairman of the board of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship Program at Columbia University, a member of the Board of Visitors of Columbia College of Columbia University, a trustee of the business journalism program of the City University of New York, a director of the International Center for Journalists, a member of the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Economic Club of New York and the International Advisory Board of the Tsinghua University School of Journalism in Beijing and member of the board of YAI, the Institute for People With Disabilities. Winkler also supports the Society of Business Editors and Writers (SABEW), MOMA, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, YAI Institute for People with Disabilities, Ohr Somayach (Yeshiva in Jerusalem) and Aish HaTorah (Jewish educational programs).[13]
