Mathilde ter Heijne (born 1969) is a Dutch contemporary visual artist based in Berlin, Germany. She works in a variety of different mediums, including installation, sculpture, photography, and video. Her work often explores themes of social, cultural, or political phenomena and incorporates elements such as literature, film, theater, and performance, sometimes using life-size dummies resembling the artist herself.
Specific topics featured in her work include women marginalized in society, domestic and political violence, matriarchal societies, ancient rituals and spells, the decoding of prehistoric symbol systems, and the psychology of various fictitious female artists. Through these topics, her work focuses on issues of political violence and power-relationships within society and often questions her role as an artist within these frameworks.
Ter Heijne studied in Maastricht at the Stadsakademie (1988-1992) and in Amsterdam at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (1992-1994). She is currently working as a Professor of Visual Art, Performance, and Installation at Kunsthochschule, Kassel, Germany.
