- Mata Jito
-
Mātā Jīto (Gurmukhi: ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀਤੋ, Shahmukhi: ماتا جیتو ) was the first of three wives of the last Sikh guru Gobind Singh[1][2][3] Mata Jito was the daughter of Harjas Bhikia of Lahore. She married the guru on 21 June, 1677.[4][5] The couple had three children together: Zorawar Singh, Jujhar Singh and Fateh Singh.[6] Very little is known of her life outside the event that marked the birth of Sikhism. She was the one to add patāsā (flat sugar pills) in amrit (nector of immortality) that was prepared to celebrate the birth of khālsā (formal Sikhism) in 1699.[3]
Denial
Sikhism is a monotheistic and monogamous religion and as a consequence it is common among orthodox Sikhs to dismiss the very idea of a guru marrying more than once. According to the proponents of this view, Mata Jito was the maiden name of Mata Sundari.
