Master of Malt Industry Independent Bottler Founded 1985 Headquarters Royal Tunbridge Wells Area served Worldwide Products Whisky Master of Malt is a retail seller and independent bottler of Scotch whisky and other alcoholic beverages. The company was founded in 1985, and is based in Crowborough, East Sussex, England. It began as a retail shop in the nearby town of Tunbridge Wells in west Kent.[1][2]
History
Master of Malt was founded in 1985. It operates as both a retail web vendor and independent bottler of alcoholic beverages, primarily specializing in Scotch whisky.
Since 2007, Master of Malt has focused its bottling operations on single cask whiskies that have been bottled at natural cask strength, without chill-filtration or the addition of caramel colouring.[3]
The company had its products rated in the 2009 Jim Murray Whisky Bible,[4] in which 8 out of the 12 bottles in the company's current range received of 90 points or higher, out of a possible 100.
Under the Scotch Whisky Regulations of 2009, it will become unlawful for Single Malt Scotch Whisky (only Single Malts - not blends) to be exported from Scotland other than in a bottle labelled for retail sale, effective 23 November 2012.[5][6] Section 7 of the Act contains the pertinent provisions:
(2) During the period until (and including) 22nd November 2012, a person must not move any Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Scotland to another country in a wooden cask or other wooden holder.
(3) On and after 23rd November 2012 a person must not move any Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Scotland to another country except in a bottle (made of any inert material) that is labelled for retail sale.
A foreseeable result would be for the Master of Malt company to move its Single Malt bottling operations to Scotland (or to hire another bottler to produce its Single Malts).
