It was funded from a bond passed in February 2006 and opened in 2010. The school consists of four "small learning communities" (SLC), also referred to as schools-within-a-school. Each has its own principal. The four small learning community schools are the Academy of Construction and Engineering, Bio-Med Academy, International School of Communications, and School for the Entrepreneur.[2] The school was previously part of the Marysville Pilchuck High School which had a student population of nearly 3,000. [3]
The school facility includes approximately 192,000 square feet (17,800 m2), has a capacity of 1,600 students, and is organized with each small learning community in a separate building. A shared common building provides administration, physical education, cafeteria, and other services for the campus.[2][4]
In September, 2011 the Council of Educational Facilities Planners International announced that the school campus was a recipient of the James D. MacConnell Award, an international award for excellence in school design.[5][6] The school was designed by architecture firm DLR Group.[7]
