Mary Wells Morris (born September 4, 1764) is the person that Wellsboro, Pennsylvania is named after. She was born in Burlington County, New Jersey.[1] She moved to Tioga County with her husband Benjamin, her son Samuel, and her daughter Rebecca. They were Philadelphia Quakers. They became the first residents of the Wellsboro.[2] She remained in Wellsboro until she died on November 6, 1819; she is buried with her husband in the Wellsboro Cemetery.[3]
Recently a statue was erected in her honor; it is a life sized bronze statue. When they first started to design her they discovered that they didn’t really have a picture of Mary so they looked at her mother’s portrait and used facial likenesses.[2]
