Mirzakarim Norbekov

Mirzakarim Sanakulovich Norbekov (Мирзакарим Санакулович Норбеков) is an alternative medicine teacher well known in the countries of the former Soviet Union. He is originally from Uzbekistan. He has written a number of best-selling books that explain his philosophy of feeling happy and living a healthy lifestyle, as well as his belief that patients should take an active role in curing their illnesses. He also holds classes and workshops around Russia and other countries to demonstrate his beliefs.

Claims of healing

Norbekov's healing techniques are rooted in ancient Sufi medicine which he learned from traditional healers in central Asia. He is most famous for his programs aimed at eliminating any eye disease through physical and mind exercises. Using the system properly, one is promised to achieve a decrease in eye defects by 0.25 diopters per day. Full recovery is claimed also in cases of glaucoma and cataract.

The exercises in Norbekov's books are also offered as a solution to removing scars from the skin completely. Major and most important part of the exercises is a condition that he calls Octava. It can be achieved by visualizing that one is happy, healthy in all respects, youthful and empowered.

Controversies

Alternative medicine is now well established in the United States and Western Europe, and is recommended by countless doctors as a supplement or even replacement to western techniques, however this is not the case in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet states. Due to this fact Norbekov is often seen as a controversial figure by misinformed individuals who are not aware of the fact that virtually all of his practices are identical to ones that have been scientifically tested in the west and are considered sound by the National Institute of Health.

Norbekov presents himself with the title of Academician, but he is not listed as a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is listed as a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (РАЕН). In his books, he mentions being a member of several other foreign academies. One of those organizations is the International Academy of Authors of Scientific Inventions. It is listed on the website of the European Academy of Natural Sciences [http://www.niic.info/] . Alongside are links to alternative institutions, claiming technologies to restore the health by the application of runes. The nature of the claims made on the websites of those scientific communities can be described as pseudoscience.

Norbekov has published a paper on the enzyme activity of acetylcholinesterase in erythrocytes. Only an excerpt of the paper is available on the website of RAEN. In his books, he is misguiding the reader that no previous research was done on the properties and activities of this enzyme.

In his book, "The experience of a fool, or the key to enlightenment", he also claims falsely that he is the first person to ever explore the biological activity of erythrocytes.

However, regardless of personal controversies the healing techniques taught by Norbekov and his colleagues are very similar to those taught by traditional healers all over the world, and while little scientific testing has been done on Norbekov's techniques specifically, a plethora of testing has been conducted on techniques that are virtually identical. Creative visualization, breath work, and acupressure massage are just a small number of techniques recommended by Norbekov which are also now accepted as legitimate forms of healing. What ever controversies may surround Norbekov's personal life, his courses and books consist of practices that are considered safe and effective by the National Institute of Health.
