Mars Area Middle School is one of five schools in the Mars Area School District. It is located just outside of Mars, Pennsylvania, in Adams Township. The school houses approximately 500 students in seventh and eighth grades.
Contents
History
Mars Area Middle School opened to students in sixth through eighth grades in 1971. The school was built using an "open classroom" concept. In 1998, the school underwent an expansion project that included seven new classrooms, a special education area and additional parking. In 2007, sixth grade was moved to the District's newly constructed Mars Area Centennial School, which house students in fifth and sixth grades.
Sports/Activities
Mars Area Middle School offers a variety of interscholastic sports including football, basketball, soccer, cross country, wrestling, softball and track & field. Other activities include band, chorus, orchestra and cheerleading.
The school also boasts and extensive Student Government program that is modeled after Pennsylvania and United States government, giving a practical lesson in how government works. Through the Student Government program, student participate in a variety of committees and activities related to improving the school environment and the community.
The middle school also participates in Mars Area School District's "Planet Peace: You Can Make the Difference" Anti-Bullying Program. The program empowers students, teachers and staff members to recognize and prevent bullying and to increase feelings of positive belonging.
Staff
Mr. Richard Cornell is the principal of Mars Area Middle School, which has more than 40 teachers/staff members.
